South Africa’s Men’s Hockey team once again demonstrated their fighting spirit with a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, falling just short against a strong French side in a 4–3 thriller in Kuala Lumpur.

The match, which marked Matt de Sousa’s 50th cap, began with an early setback — French captain Victor Charlet scored in the opening minute through a penalty corner drag flick. But the South Africans responded with confidence, thanks to Jaydon Brooker, who scored his first senior international goal — a composed strike into the bottom corner, levelling the score at 1–1 before halftime.

France Takes Control, But SA Rallies

In the third quarter, France surged ahead with two more goals from Charlet and a fourth from Etienne Esmenjaud, taking the score to 4–1. Many teams might have faltered, but South Africa mounted a valiant response.

Marvin Simons, on debut, added his name to the scoresheet with a delicate deflection off a Matt de Sousa assist. Just moments later, Brooker struck again from a penalty corner, narrowing the gap to 4–3 with just 90 seconds on the clock.

The team pressed for an equaliser until the final whistle, nearly breaching the French defence with one last circle entry — but it wasn’t to be. Despite the narrow loss, the match showcased South Africa’s determination and emerging talent.
