Springboks vs Italy
Springboks Gear Up for Italy Clash Amidst Fresh Faces and Fierce Expectations
A New Chapter at Loftus Versfeld
With Jesse Kriel named captain for the first time and five changes made to the starting lineup, the Springboks are set to face Italy this weekend in Pretoria with a mix of experience, debut talent, and high expectations.
Rassie Erasmus’ latest selection speaks to a broader strategy—balance game time, manage squad depth, and continue a winning streak with emerging leaders. With Siya Kolisi sidelined by injury, Kriel steps up as the 67th Springbok skipper, while vice-captain Eben Etzebeth returns from his spell off the field.
Fullback Damian Willemse returns after a series of setbacks, while Faf de Klerk and Jasper Wiese also make welcome appearances. The exciting inclusion of debutant Vincent Tshituka, after a strong showing against the Barbarians, adds to the anticipation. Erasmus praised the forward’s readiness, calling his progression into the Test side “well-earned.”
Key Selections and Tactical Adjustments
The Springbok backline retains the pace and flair from the Barbarians clash, with Handre Pollard slotting into fly-half and combining with scrum-half Morne van den Berg. The back three of Willemse, Kolbe, and Arendse promises explosive plays, while the midfield remains solid with Damian de Allende and Kriel.
Up front, Wiese, Etzebeth, and Wilco Louw are notable additions, providing both grit and go-forward ball. The six-two split on the bench ensures depth, especially in the tight exchanges expected against Italy’s powerful pack.
Erasmus warned against underestimating the Azzurri. “They’re passionate, physical, and play exciting rugby. We’ll need to stick to our structures to get the result.”
