Cricket South Africa has given its domestic game a new identity for the 2026/27 season, but the more significant change may be what happens on the field: provincial teams are going to play considerably more cricket.

The revamped structure, unveiled as part of the official launch of the new domestic season, is designed to give players greater exposure to the longer format while creating a clearer commercial identity across South Africa’s competitions.

For Division 1, that means an increase from seven to 10 first class matches per team. Division 2 goes even further, with each of its seven teams scheduled to play 12 matches, double the six they have traditionally played.

It is a meaningful change in a domestic system that has been under pressure to provide South Africa’s next generation of international players with more substantial red ball experience.
