In a thrilling start to the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa, the Proteas took a commanding position after bowling Bangladesh out for 106 on Day 1. South Africa closed their innings at 308, gaining a significant 202-run lead.

Kagiso Rabada’s performance was a highlight, with the pace bowler taking three wickets and becoming the fastest South African to claim 300 Test wickets.

Bangladesh’s Collapse and South Africa’s Response

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat, but their decision backfired on a lively Mirpur pitch. Four of Bangladesh’s top six batsmen failed to reach double digits, leaving the hosts in deep trouble. 

Mahmudul Hasan Joy top-scored with 30 runs, but he received little support from the rest of the team. South Africa’s bowlers, especially Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj took three wickets each to bundle Bangladesh out for a paltry total.

South Africa’s response with the bat wasn’t without its challenges, as they lost six wickets by the end of the first day, but valuable contributions from Kyle Verreynne (114 off 144) and Wiaan Mulder helped secure a solid lead. 

Verreynne’s century was pivotal, aided by a strong partnership with Mulder and a late stand with Dane Piedt. This impressive performance put South Africa in the driver’s seat, and Bangladesh will have to put up a strong fight to stay in the contest.
