The recognition is monumental, as he became the first goalkeeper from an African club to be nominated for the Yashin Trophy, joining an elite list of goalkeepers like Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin.

In his pre-event speech, Williams expressed his hopes that this achievement would inspire more South Africans and Africans to reach global recognition, stating, “It’s a massive achievement. I still get goosebumps. Hopefully, this will open doors for more South Africans and more Africans to get the recognition.”
